Making Wines That Evoke a Sense of Place
In the quaint, coastal town of Half Moon Bay, Calif., longtime friends Dave Labuda and David Cline decided to embark on a new hobby: wine making. The friends began sourcing grapes and creating wine under the label Cetrella Private Cellars, and selling the wine through Dave’s restaurant, Cetrella. For three years they created wine from sourced vineyards until they decided to take it a step further, by purchasing their own vineyard. After months of searching for the perfect, majestic property, Dave and David chose a small, rustic and unkempt vineyard resting on a hilltop overlooking the town of Sonoma in what is now the Moon Mountain AVA.
While the vineyard was not the picturesque lot the men imagined, it produced the deep colored and intensely flavored grapes that make Moon Mountain wines famous. In order to maintain the vineyard in a sustainable manner while also bringing it to its full potential, the famed Sonoma organic farmer, Phil Coturri, began farming the vineyard in 2007. Once the vineyard was under the influence of Phil, Dave and David decided to hang up their winemaking hats and hand over their grapes to Tim Milos, a master at creating the elegant, luscious wines that only mountain grapes are capable of. Now that the wine had moved on from its humble beginnings, it deserved a new name; not forgetting where the winemaking idea came from, Dave chose the name “Liquid Sky Vineyards” to represent the foggy skies of Half Moon Bay, where the dream began.
The Liquid Sky vineyard is now a flourishing organic and sustainable estate, where the land, plants, and animals coexist in harmony. Both the vines and the grapes are patiently watched from the vineyard to the barrel, to the bottle and to the glass. Since its creation, Liquid Sky Vineyards wines, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, have been celebrated by all who come across them, winning several awards and medals from competitions all over California. What started out as a simple hobby, has become our very own Sonoma Valley/Moon Mountain masterpiece.
Below are the people who created the winery and today produce the wines of Liquid Sky Vineyards.
Founder & Owner: Dave Labuda
Dave Labuda is the owner of Liquid Sky Vineyards, Liquid Sky Estate, and Cetrella Restaurant. Overseeing the three companies fulfills Dave’s passion for fine wine and food, though he also dedicates time to MATRIXX Software, where he is the CEO and CTO. Dave’s vision for all his ventures is to create a product that is classic yet distinctive, and the highest quality possible.
Vineyard Manager: Phil Coturri
Phil is a lifelong farmer and is considered Sonoma Valley’s leading organic viticulturist, with over 400 acres of vines certified with the CCOF. Phil has been growing organic wine grapes in Sonoma for over 25 years and farms Liquid Sky Vineyards organically – without the use of synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides.
Winemaker: Timothy Milos
A sixth generation Bay Area native, Timothy grew up exploring the hills of rural west Marin. Timothy pursued Plant Pathology studies at New York’s Cornell University and graduate level research in Enology and Viticulture at California’s U.C. Davis. While in New York, Timothy discovered the winemaking going on in the Finger Lakes area. Here at last he found an intersection for his passions — science, history and art, all tied to the land, the seasons, and the work of one’s hands. Timothy has made wine ever since. In 1997, he began working his way up the Napa Valley wine ladder, starting at Opus One, moving on to Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, and eventually directing winemaking at Cliff Lede and the former S. Anderson. Timothy has been working with Liquid Sky Vineyards since its inception and is responsible for crafting all of our wines.
